City Streets 02

November 8, 2015
My little sketch of Edna at the Window done. Think I'll now try some alternative treatments as I want to try it as a night or at least dusk scene.
Charlie is calling up to Edna to see if she wants to come with him to see Raging Speedhorn at Brixton tonight. He's got a spare ticket. Edna is contemplating her conflicting emotions.

I love these little narratives. It's a sort of flash fiction with another layer of meaning through the visuals.
Very Giles, very larson.

City streets - little stories

November 7, 2015
Work in progress. First sketch of new piece. Working name is Chaplin Steps. Possible painting of night or dusk scene. Guy on the sidewalk calling up to Edna at the window. Actually, that's a better title; "Edna at the window".
Once again, I cant resist making art that has little stories. I think it's a mixture of loving the 'History paintings' of the old masters and being fatally attracted to the works of Heath Robinson, Giles and Gary Larson ! LOL.

I'm beginning to accept that I can't / won'...

October 29, 2015
Enjoyed a day Urban sketching with the Exeter Sketch Crawl last weekend.

Great group of people and despite the weather we got some sketching done indoors AND outside.

And here's a painting of a little alley just off Gandy St in Exeter.

Rainy ambient music

July 28, 2015
As I stood by the back doors looking out at the rain pour down upon our garden and surrounding woods I was inspired to pick up the guitar. After noodling a little, plugging into my Blackstar iBEAM amp and switching on the camera this is what happened.
Sorry for the dodgy sound quality but it was just the onboard camera mic.  The sound of the rain, however, blends in perfectly :)

The Diorama in progress

July 19, 2015
I've spent a lot of this weekend on this project and I'm absolutely loving it.
It falls somewhere between assemblage, set design, architectural modeling and environmental design!
Also there is this lovely sense of setting a scene for a drama to unfold, a story to play out; but I'm not sure yet whether I should make that story explicit, implicit or simply leave it open to interpretation.
The latter seems the obvious (and rather establishment art) way to go but I'm not sure. Perhaps it could be fun...

Building Diorama

July 19, 2015
New project underway as I begin cutting and assembling foam board, card, paper and assorted materials into an artwork I have vague mental images of and a couple of thumbnail sketches.
The theme was 'angry mob heading for the castle'.  That might be changing.  Funny way to spend your waking hours I know.

Use of Weapons by Iain M Banks

June 27, 2015

As I've been re-reading all the Iain M Banks books (in correct order) recently it was inevitable that I would be inspired to come up with some artwork.

There are, of course, thousands of amazing images and events described in the numerous 'Culture' and 'non-Culture' Science Fiction books but having just finished Use of Weapons I was drawn to a couple of pages that have always stuck in my mind since the book was first published in 1990.

The hero/anti-hero Zakalwe (beloved of Banks fans the world...

'Mad' John Martin

May 25, 2015
I've been 'channeling' the spirit of John Martin - the painter of vast and (in some cases) terrifying views/landscapes/disasters and 'biblical' fables.
Not sure where this is going but I'll be interested to see.
